Low Back Pain Relief in Gettysburg, PA

Gentle, hands-on care for the ache that comes from lifting, sitting, driving, and just living in your body - from a downtown Gettysburg chiropractor.

You bent over to tie your boot and your low back locked up. Or you spent the week framing a deck, and the dull ache that started Monday is the first thing you feel when you roll out of bed now. Maybe you lifted a car seat wrong getting it out of the back seat, or you have been driving between job sites all month and your low back has had enough. However it started, low back pain has a way of making everything harder - work, sleep, getting through the grocery store - and you are tired of working around it.

You are not alone. Low back pain is one of the most common reasons people walk through our door at 18 Carlisle St in downtown Gettysburg, and it is exactly the kind of thing this office is set up to help with.

Why your low back hurts

Most low back pain is what chiropractors call mechanical - it comes from how your spine moves, how the muscles around it work, and how you use it day to day. Lifting with a twist, hours in one position, a weak or tired core, a mattress that is past its prime, a long drive with no break - these are the usual suspects. Sometimes a joint in your low back stops moving the way it should, and the muscles around it tighten up to protect it. That tightness is what you feel as stiffness and ache. It is common, it is frustrating, and it is exactly the kind of thing this office works on every day.

How we approach low back pain in this office

Your first visit starts with listening - what happened, how long it has been going on, what makes it better or worse, and what you want to get back to. Then a hands-on exam to see how your low back moves, where it is stiff, and what the joints and muscles are doing. From there, Dr. Natalie builds a plan in plain language.

That plan usually combines spinal adjustments to help restricted joints move freely again, soft tissue therapy to release the tight muscles around them, and a few simple rehabilitative exercises you can do at home so the work holds between visits. Nothing is forced. If your low back needs a different kind of care, she will tell you honestly and point you to the right provider.

See a doctor first if...

Some low back pain needs a doctor, imaging, or the emergency room - not a chiropractor. See a doctor first, or go to the ER, if you have:

  • • Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in your saddle area
  • • Numbness or weakness spreading down both legs
  • • Back pain after a fall, a car accident, or a serious injury
  • • Fever with back pain, or back pain with chills
  • • Sudden, severe pain you cannot explain
  • • Pain that is worse at night or when you lie down

If any of those sound like what you are feeling, please call your doctor or go to the emergency department first. We will be here when you are ready for conservative care.

What feeling better usually looks like

Feeling better is rarely a straight line. Most people notice the sharp edge come off first - the pain that stopped you in your tracks gets duller, and you can do a little more before it kicks in. Then the stiff mornings get easier. Then you realize you got through a full day of work without thinking about your back. Some days will be better than others, and that is normal. The goal is steady, durable improvement - not a quick fix that fades by the weekend. Dr. Natalie checks in on how you are doing at every visit and adjust the plan as you go.

How this fits with the rest of your care

Low back pain and sciatica often go together - if your pain travels down your leg, that page may help. If your trouble started at work, our work strain page is written for you. And if your low back pain is part of pregnancy, see our prenatal chiropractic care page.

Low back pain questions, answered

I tweaked my back lifting something at work - can you see me this week?

Call us. We keep room in the schedule for people who hurt their back and need to be seen sooner. We will do our best to get you in quickly.

Will the adjustment crack my back?

You may feel or hear a small pop, which is normal. If you are nervous about it, tell Dr. Natalie, as there are gentle techniques that do not involve popping at all.

Should I use ice or heat on my low back?

It depends on what is going on. We will give you specific guidance at your visit. A general rule: ice for something that just flared up, heat for stiffness that has been there a while.

Can I still work while my back heals?

Often, yes - with some changes. We will talk through what your day looks like and help you modify how you lift, sit, and move so you can keep going without making it worse.

What if my back pain keeps coming back?

That is common, and it is exactly why we include home exercises. The goal is to help your back hold its own between visits, not to keep you coming back forever.
