Sciatica and Leg Pain Care in Gettysburg, PA

Gentle, conservative care for the pain that starts in your low back and travels down through your hip and leg - from a downtown Gettysburg chiropractor.

It starts as an ache in your low back, then it travels - down through your hip, into the back of your thigh, maybe all the way to your calf. Sometimes it is sharp, like a jolt. Sometimes it is a burning ache that will not let you get comfortable in any position. You might be in your third trimester and your pelvis has shifted, or you might have been lifting and twisting at work for years and your low back finally had enough. However it started, pain that travels down your leg has a way of making you afraid to move - and that is exactly when you need someone to look at the whole picture.

Sciatica is a common reason people come in to our office on Carlisle Street in Gettysburg, and it is the kind of thing that benefits from a careful, hands-on approach.

What sciatica actually is

Sciatica is not a diagnosis - it is a set of symptoms. It means something is irritating the sciatic nerve, which runs from your low back through your hip and down your leg. The most common cause is a disc in your low back pressing on a nerve root, but it can also come from a restricted joint in your low back, tight muscles in your hip pressing on the nerve, or the pelvic changes of pregnancy. Lifting and twisting at work, a long time in one position, pregnancy, and just the wear of daily life can all contribute. It is common, it is scary when it first shows up, and it is exactly the kind of thing this office works on.

How we approach sciatica and leg pain

Your first visit starts with listening - where the pain starts, where it travels, what makes it better or worse, and whether you have had any numbness or weakness. Then a careful, hands-on exam - not just your low back, but your hips, pelvis, and the way you move. From there, Dr. Natalie builds a plan in plain language.

That plan may include gentle spinal adjustments to help restricted joints move freely, soft tissue therapy to release tight muscles around the hip and low back, and simple movements and positions that may help between visits. If your exam points to something that needs imaging or a specialist, she will tell you honestly before any treatment.

See a doctor first if...

Some leg pain needs a doctor, imaging, or the emergency room - not a chiropractor. See a doctor first, or go to the ER, if you have:

  • • Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in your saddle area
  • • Numbness or weakness spreading down both legs
  • • Pain after a fall, a car accident, or a serious injury
  • • Sudden, severe leg pain you cannot explain
  • • Leg pain with fever

If any of those sound like what you are feeling, please call your doctor or go to the emergency department first. We will be here when you are ready for conservative care.

What progress usually looks like

With sciatica, the pain often retreats from the far end first - the calf and foot calm down before the hip and low back do. That is a good sign. You may notice the sharp jolts get less frequent, then the burning ache gets duller, then you can sit or stand a little longer before it kicks in. Progress is not always a straight line, and flare-ups happen. The goal is steady improvement - less pain, more movement, and a plan that helps you keep it. Dr. Natalie checks in at every visit and adjusts as you go.

How this fits with the rest of your care

Sciatica and low back pain usually share the same roots - if your pain stays in your back, that page may help. For the hands-on side of care, see our spinal adjustments page.

Sciatica questions, answered

Is sciatica from a herniated disc?

It can be, but not always. A careful exam helps us understand what is going on. If your exam points to something that needs imaging, we will tell you and point you to the right provider.

I am pregnant and have sciatica - can you help?

Gentle, conservative care may help. Dr. Natalie is certified in prenatal care through the ICPA. Please keep your OB or midwife in the loop about all care you receive.

Should I keep moving or should I rest?

Complete bed rest is rarely the answer, but pushing through sharp pain is not wise either. We will help you find the middle - gentle movement that does not flare it up.

How long will sciatica take to improve?

We do not promise timelines. Some people improve quickly; others take longer. What we can do is give you a clear plan and check in at every visit.

Will I need an MRI?

Most people do not. But if your exam shows signs that need imaging - like weakness or numbness - we will tell you honestly and refer you to the right place.
