Shoulder, Hip and Knee Pain Care in Gettysburg, PA
Hands-on care for the joints that take the load - shoulders, hips, and knees - from a downtown Gettysburg chiropractor who treats joints outside the spine, too.
Your shoulder aches when you reach overhead, and now you are doing everything left-handed. Or your knee swells up every time you are on a concrete floor all day, and by Friday you are dreading the stairs. Maybe your hip has been stiff for months and you just assumed it was part of getting older - until you could not get comfortable sleeping on your side. Joint pain in a shoulder, hip, or knee has a way of making you work around it until you realize how much you have been giving up. And if you work with your hands, a sore joint is not just annoying - it costs you time on the job.
This is a common reason people come in to our office in downtown Gettysburg, and it is exactly the kind of thing this practice is set up to help with.
Why joints ache
Joints ache for all kinds of reasons. Repetitive use - gripping tools, reaching overhead, climbing ladders, standing on hard floors - wears on them over time. An old injury that never fully healed can come back to haunt you. Tight muscles around a joint can pull it out of good alignment and make it ache. Sometimes a joint is just not moving the way it should, and the irritation builds. Shoulders, hips, and knees take a lot of load, especially if your work or your sport asks them to repeat the same motion all day. It is common, it is frustrating, and it is exactly the kind of thing this office works on.
How we approach joint pain in this office
Your first visit starts with listening - which joint, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and what you want to get back to. Then a hands-on exam of the joint itself and the way the joints above and below it are working. From there, your chiropractor builds a plan in plain language.
That plan may include extremity adjustments to help the joint move freely, soft tissue therapy to release the tight muscles around it, and simple exercises to keep it stable and strong. If your joint needs a different kind of care - like imaging or a physical therapist - she will tell you honestly before any treatment.
See a doctor first if...
Some joint pain needs a doctor, imaging, or the emergency room - not a chiropractor. See a doctor first, or go to the ER, if you have:
- • A joint that is hot, red, or swollen for no clear reason
- • A joint that gave out or locked up on you
- • Pain after a fall, a car accident, or a serious injury
- • A joint you cannot move at all
- • Joint pain with a fever
If any of those sound right, please call your doctor or go to the emergency department first. We will be here when you are ready for conservative care.
What getting better usually looks like
Joint pain usually eases in layers. First, the sharp pain with certain movements gets duller - you can reach a little higher or put a little more weight on it. Then the swelling and stiffness take less time to settle down after a day of work. Then you realize you got through the week without thinking about that joint. Some days will be better than others, and flare-ups happen. The goal is steady, lasting improvement - less pain, more range, and a joint you trust. Dr. Natalie checks in at every visit and adjusts the plan as you go.
How this fits with the rest of your care
If your joint pain started at work, our work strain page is written for you. For the hands-on side of care, see our extremity adjustments page for how we work directly on joints outside the spine.
Joint pain questions, answered
My shoulder hurts when I reach overhead - can you help?
Often, yes. We work on the shoulder joint, the muscles around it, and the upper back that supports it. If it needs imaging or a specialist, we will say so.
My knee swells up after work every day - is that normal?
It is common, but it is worth looking at. Swelling that comes back every day is your joint telling you something. We will examine it and help you figure out the next step.
Can you adjust a knee or a shoulder?
Yes. As an extremity-adjusting practice, we work directly on joints outside the spine - shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles.
Should I see a physical therapist instead?
For some joint problems, a physical therapist is the right call. We will tell you honestly if that is the case and point you to one. Sometimes chiropractic care and PT work well together.
Can I keep working while my joint heals?
Usually, yes - with some changes. We will talk through what your day looks like and help you modify how you lift, reach, and move so you can keep going without making it worse.
