Neck Pain and Stiffness Care in Gettysburg, PA
Gentle, hands-on care for the stiff, heavy, wooden-neck feeling that comes from desk work, driving, overhead labor, and poor sleep - in downtown Gettysburg.
You woke up and could not turn your head to check your blind spot. Or you have been at the laptop for three weeks straight, and now your neck feels like it is made of wood - stiff, heavy, and sending a dull ache up into the base of your skull. Maybe you were overhead on a job all day, or you have been carrying a baby on one hip and your neck has had to make up the difference. Neck pain and stiffness have a way of creeping in until you realize you have not turned your head fully in either direction for days.
It is one of the most common things people come in for at our office on Carlisle Street in Gettysburg, and it responds well to conservative, hands-on care.
Where neck stiffness comes from
Most neck stiffness is mechanical - it comes from how you hold your head, how you sleep, and how the muscles and joints in your neck are working. Hours looking down at a phone or a screen, a bad pillow, a long drive, overhead work, carrying kids or tools on one side - these are the usual reasons. The joints in your neck can get restricted, and the muscles tighten up around them to protect the area. That tightness is what you feel as stiffness and ache. It is common, it is annoying, and it is exactly the kind of thing this office works on.
How we work on neck pain here
Your first visit starts with listening - when it started, what makes it better or worse, and what you want to get back to doing. Then a hands-on exam to see how your neck moves, where it is stiff, and how the joints and muscles are doing. From there, Dr. Natalie builds a plan in plain language.
That plan may include gentle cervical adjustments to help restricted joints move freely, soft tissue therapy to release the tight upper traps and muscles at the base of your skull, and simple posture and movement cues you can use at your desk or in the truck. If your neck needs a different kind of care, she will say so.
See a doctor first if...
Some neck pain needs a doctor or the emergency room - not a chiropractor. See a doctor first, or go to the ER, if you have:
- • Pain or stiffness after a fall, a car accident, or a head injury
- • Numbness or weakness spreading into your arms or hands
- • Pain that shoots down your arm
- • Loss of bladder or bowel control
- • The worst headache of your life, or a sudden severe headache
- • Fever and a stiff neck that came on together
- • Pain that is steadily getting worse
If any of those sound right, please call your doctor or go to the emergency department first. We will be here when you are ready for conservative care.
What improvement usually looks like
Neck stiffness usually eases before the pain fully leaves. First, you notice you can turn your head a little further to check the mirror. Then the morning stiffness takes less time to loosen up. Then you realize you got through a full day at the desk without that heavy, wooden feeling. Progress is not always a straight line - some days will be better than others, and that is normal. The goal is steady, lasting improvement, not a quick fix that fades by the weekend. Dr. Natalie checks in at every visit and adjusts the plan as you go.
How this fits with the rest of your care
Neck stiffness and tension headaches often go together - if your neck tightness travels up into your head, that page may help. For the hands-on side of care, see our spinal adjustments page.
Neck pain questions, answered
I slept wrong and can't turn my head - can you see me today?
Call us. We keep room in the schedule for people who woke up with a stiff neck and need to be seen sooner. We will do our best to get you in quickly.
Will you crack my neck?
You may feel or hear a small pop, which is normal. If that worries you, tell Dr. Natalie, as there are gentle techniques that do not involve any popping.
Is my neck pain from my pillow?
It can be. We will talk through your sleep setup at your visit. Sometimes a small change to how you sleep makes a big difference.
Can I still work while my neck heals?
Usually, yes - with some adjustments. We will talk through your day and help you change how you sit, reach, and look at screens so you can keep going without making it worse.
What if my neck pain is from a car accident?
If you were in an accident, please see a doctor first to make sure nothing serious is going on. Once you are cleared, we are happy to help with conservative care.
